WordPress administrators have been urged to update their websites immediately after security researchers uncovered a critical vulnerability that could allow attackers to execute malicious code and potentially gain control of vulnerable websites.
The flaw, tracked as CVE-2026-64638, is a high-severity pre-authentication Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability affecting WordPress Core. Security researchers demonstrated that, under specific conditions, the vulnerability can be chained with other WordPress features to achieve PHP code execution on the server, significantly increasing its impact. The issue has been fixed in WordPress 7.0.3, and patches have also been backported to supported older versions.
Most XSS vulnerabilities require a user to already have access to the application or interact with malicious content. However, CVE-2026-64638 is different because it is a pre-authentication vulnerability, meaning an attacker does not need a valid WordPress account to trigger the initial attack.
Researchers discovered that a specially crafted username submitted to the WordPress login page can result in malicious JavaScript being executed when the error page is displayed.
